Multidisciplinary construction partner BESIX Netherlands goes digital
Everyone knows the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, the world’s tallest building. And we are all familiar with the unique Atomium in Brussels as well. These are just two high-profile examples of the many projects that the BESIX Group has worked on through the years. The BESIX Group operates in over 20 countries across the globe. As a multidisciplinary construction partner, BESIX Netherlands has a track record of innovative and trendsetting projects that spans over 25 years. BESIX Netherlands is known for various prominent buildings and projects in Rotterdam, including the Maastoren, the New Orleans, the Montevideo, the Terraced Tower, the rerouting of a stretch of railway, and the 11km connector road between the A16 and A13 motorways, as well as for the Sluishuis in Amsterdam and the Public Transport Terminal in Utrecht.
From good to even better
“Good collaboration makes the difference in any project,” says Hoang Pham, process coordinator at BESIX Netherlands. “Plus, clients increasingly require a process-based approach. Process schemes are ideal tools when you need to identify overlap between tasks and responsibilities in a multidisciplinary project. It is living information that provides direction for the method used for a project. With this in mind, our project management team took a major step forward two years ago, choosing Sensus to be able to better manage and visualise processes.
What we did at the time as a working group was standardise the processes and fill in any gaps to complete them. Besides an overarching management plan, we also use standard documentation, sub-plans, work instructions and templates. And on top of that, we use applications for things such as document management and inspections. All of this requires a sound application landscape.”
From analogue to digital
“We want to keep improving and keep optimising our business processes in the future as well. And that’s why we went looking for effective business management tooling to document our business processes digitally, because digital processes are simply a whole lot easier to optimise than analogue ones.”
“We looked into our current process design practices and how we make processes visible and accessible for end users – easy to log in and click through – as well as into how to optimise these processes, which user tooling we have available for that, which rights power users hold, and how easy it all is to reconfigure. Sensus process management’s comprehensive BPM solution dovetailed perfectly with this. Both for power users tasked with modeling the program and for end users, Sensus’ BPM tools are extremely user-friendly.”
Familiar visual environment
“Sensus process management scores well on all fronts, which is why we opted to go with Sensus. So far, we have used Sensus BPM Online to restructure our management system at company level. Our next project will be supported using this newly restructured system.
At BESIX, we had analogue processes in a format that everyone understands. So it was important to us that end users would be able to access the digital processes in an environment that resembles the analogue process schemes that we used to have. Also on this point, Sensus process management delivered. Sensus truly gives us the features we need and they are continuously developed further. When bugs in features occur, there are short lines of communication for us to report them. Sensus keeps us posted on when these will be dealt with as part of the overall continued development of Sensus.”
Solid start
“We have now documented all processes digitally in Sensus. It’s a good start, because all those processes are now available in one single location. Aside from that, it’s important to me that we can stick to our continuous optimisation cycle. I trust that we will be able to start using the Sensus tool for all new BESIX Netherlands projects, and am curious to see which steps it will enable us to take.”
